UMC Utrecht has two fatal incidents during operations in the ENT department concealed from the Health Inspectorate.
According to research of the television program Zembla. The hospital has two incidents under pressure from the broadcast still reported to IGZ. The Inspectorate has launched an investigation.
In November 2013 a surgeon at UMC Utrecht during ENT surgery accidentally severed the carotid artery of a patient. He died the next day.
The coroner has issued a certificate of natural death in the dossier, but denies in the Zembla broadcast GGD Utrecht that has looked a municipal coroner to the patient.
Operating Table
The other incident occurred in March 2013 and involved the same surgeon who became an artery during a nose job. The patient died on the operating table.
President Bernd Kremer from the Dutch ENT association said in the broadcast not to think of any argument why both incidents should be reported. His association has its own investigation into the ENT Department at UMC Utrecht.
Various ENT specialists have done an anonymous report by the Inspectorate in June 2014 of the incidents. But when asked by the inspection at the hospital was told the Inspectorate since 2012 that there had been no "noteworthy incidents." The investigation was then closed.
