According to the Russian Foreign Ministry wants less than half the population of Montenegro that the country joins the treaty organization.
In early December, invited the member states of NATO Montenegro to become the 29th member of the alliance. Russia reacted immediately dismissive. The invitation was described by Moscow as a provocation and a confrontational step, which leads to further destabilization in Europe.
"NATO's expansion harms Russia and forces us to an appropriate response", Moscow announced two weeks ago.
Montenegro has 650,000 inhabitants and the army has only 2,000 men. The country split off in 2006 from Serbia.
"NATO killers"
Saturday demonstrated in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica 2000 people against NATO membership. The demonstration had been called by the pro-Russian parties in parliament, which also demands a referendum on the issue. The protesters chanted "Russia, Russia" and "NATO killers".
The opponents of NATO membership recalled NATO's bombing of Montenegro in 1999 during the war in Kosovo, when Montenegro was still one country with Serbia.
