In the center this spring starts an experiment in which the shops in the evenings and late at night may be open. Entrepreneurs can then decide for themselves how long they stay open. The trial will last two years.
The Amsterdam city council has given green light to the proposal of coalition partners VVD and D66. According D66 faction leader Jan Paternotte people sitting or waiting for the night shopping.
"Busy families with two working parents and single people with long working hours have this flexibility necessary," said Paternotte. "The same applies to the night porter, the doctor with late service or construction worker who begins before sunrise."
He acknowledges that daytime shopping the most Amsterdammers and visitors and do not want all stores open at night. But for that one shopkeeper who wants it, it must be possible to find D66 and VVD.
