JOHANNESBURG - A tip from the American secret service CIA made sure Nelson Mandela in 1962 was arrested by the South African regime and ended up in jail for 27 years.
That the former US consul in Durban, South Africa and CIA collaborator Donald Rickard told director John Irvin.
The British director has just made the movie Mandela's Gun, which covers the period which preceded the arrest of Mandela. Rickard claims that the Americans at the time were convinced that Mandela, a lawyer and politically active in the ANC, was entirely under the control of the Soviet Union. The US feared to cause a civil war in South Africa at the hands of Mandela, which the Americans would be involved.
The ANC has said, according to the media in South Africa that the statement confirms what the party has always believed. Mandela was convicted in 1964 for planning a guerrilla war with the intent to overthrow the apartheid system. He was released in 1990. From 1994 to 1998 he was president. He died in 2013 at the age of 95.
